Under the theme of the first circumnavigation voyage in history, conceived by Ferdinand Magellan over 500 years ago, the Imprensa Nacional diary-book was designed to tell, throughout the year, the adventure of the five ships that departed from Seville in 1519.

To fulfil this purpose, all graphic resources were carefully considered. The visual details evoke nautical rhetoric, sometimes directly, sometimes abstractly — for adventurers don't always know what lies ahead. In the diary pages, the weekly grid, beyond being flexible enough to integrate a wide variety of graphic elements — from nautical charts to portraits, engravings and map illustrations — was designed to resemble lines of latitude and longitude, familiar instruments of cartography. Finally, the choice of colour palette and print materials was intended to represent noble materials — after all, this was an expedition with the high patronage of the Spanish Crown — but ones that had, in a sense, been worn by time. And so, instead of luxurious gold tones, we find weathered bronze-pearl hues.

Much like Magellan's voyage, the diary is a piece to be discovered over time.
